             This department was established in 1958 as department of statistics under aegis of the Bihar University, and was transferred to Bhagalpur University in 1960 often its establishment.

The department was pioneer in starting the teaching of computers in Bihar as a modular part of its post-graduate courses, and was among the very few universities in this country which started the teaching of computers in the university system. It has the distinction of producing first Ph-D degree in computer application of this university, and is bubbling with research activities in current areas of Computer applications namely active and deductive data base structures, artificial intelligence and topics of current interest.

The department has now established itself as a center of current and updated teaching and research activities in statistics and computer applications.
